Cusic and Ferris Edge Bassler and Mulieri in Two-Man Play-off at Manor

Mark Cusic rolled home an eight-foot putt for birdie on the first playoff hole to give himself and partner Kevin Ferris the 51st Two-Man championship of the Maryland State Golf Association at Manor Country Club in Rockville, May 3. It turned out to be their way of saying “thank you,” as they were a late replacement in the 104-team field, getting in earlier in the week.

The Breton Bay CC pair finished 31-32—63, seven under par for the 6,653-yard course. Matt Bassler-Michael Mulieri, from Rolling Road GC, finished later in the afternoon with 33-30—63, to force extra holes, then both missed from 25 feet ahead of Cusic. Mulieri’s closing birdie on the ninth created the deadlock.

The weather was cool and skies overcast when play began at 7:30, but by the afternoon the sun was out and the temperature had climbed into the 80’s.

In regulation play, Cusic, going first in the afternoon, took care of the front nine with four birdies, while Ferris collected to on the back. A surprise birdie by Cusic, the reigning MSGA Amateur champion, came at the 189-yard 17th hole where his breaking putt from 40 feet fell into the hole. “It was a bomb,” he declared.

An Interview with Kyle Carranza

The Club is very excited to have Kyle Carranza, PGA Apprentice join our staff.  I sat down with Kyle this week to ask him a few questions about his goals and to give our members a little insight on his plans for this season.

Q - Kyle, how did you become interested in the game of Golf?

I have been interested in the game of golf as long as I can remember. I played multiple sports growing up including baseball, basketball, and football. I started really getting into golf during my freshman year of high school while I enjoyed instruction from my father who has been a class “A” PGA professional since 1988. I played on my high school golf team my freshman year and had great success and have never looked back!

Q - Are you planning to become PGA Certified?

I am now enrolled in the PGA program in order to become a member of the PGA of America. This is a long process taking some people as many as 10 years. I plan to be a full member of the PGA in 4 years and I have taken the opportunity to surround myself with great support here at Breton Bay Golf & Country Club.

Q - Tell us a little about your teaching philosophy.

My teaching philosophy is to get the most out of everyone.  I believe all players can be as good as they want to be, its just a matter of the time and practice they put into the game away from the teacher.  The teacher can give you the tools and the player must use the tools to bring the game to life.

Q - What do you hope to bring to the BBG&CC Jr. Golf Program this season?

I hope to bring some fun to the junior golf program this year! I plan to get the kids out on the
course. In my opinion, this gives them an opportunity to decide if golf is a game they want to
continue to play. My goal would be that all the kids would use the instruction given during
the camp to play golf and enjoy the game with their friends or parents.

Q - Will you be continuing the Tuesday Night Ladies Program?

Tuesday ladies night will continue this year! I am very excited to meet all of the wonderful
ladies that came out last year as well as new ladies attending this year. I will be starting the
ladies program mid/end of May. This will definitely be a summer filled with fun Tuesday
nights!

Q - Tell us about your goals for BBG&CC as they relate to your new position.

My hope is to bring some energy and excitement to Breton Bay! I look forward to making
Breton Bay a place that everyone enjoys being a part of.  Maybe it is an evening date of 9
holes for husband and wife, a competitive 18 holes for a group of players, or a fun scramble
for everyone to enjoy! I look forward to being at Breton Bay Golf & Country Club and can’t
wait for the upcoming season
